Excellent Games to Teach Kids Touch Typing the Fun Way

Touch typing (aka keyboarding) is an essential skill that allows people to type efficiently and accurately without having to constantly look at the keyboard. It’s so much better to learn touch typing as a kid because it becomes second nature to them. By teaching children touch typing early on, they can develop the skill and habit of using all their fingers to type rather than just relying on a few fingers or hunting and pecking at the keyboard. This will save them time and frustration in the long run and set them up for success in their future jobs that will almost surely require typing skills.

Before starting their touch typing journey, your child might want to check their Words Per Minute (WPM) score. Words Per Minute (WPM) is the standard measurement of keyboarding speed. For this formula, a “word” is five characters (spacebar and apostrophe each count as one character). WPM represents the number of five-character “words” a person types per minute. Your child can take a free typing test from TypingPal, Typing.com, TypeDojo or TypingTest. The recommended average for kids ages 6-11 is 15-35 WPM with 80-90% accuracy, for kids ages 12-16 is 30-50 WPM with 85-95% accuracy.
